The Beach Day Schedule

My mom always has a set plan for when my family visits Maine. First, we go to Goose Rocks Beach to walk and swim, if we’re so inclined. After we’re done at the beach, we pack up our things, and we head into town.

Our dinner spot in Kennebunkport never changes. As my family walked through town, I could see the twinkling lights of Federal Jacks Restaurant and Brew Pub. I climbed the wooden steps and immediately made a beeline for the stack of souvenir maps kept in the corner.

“She used to collect these as a kid,” my brother told his girlfriend, rolling his eyes.

We were seated at table that had a view of the harbor, much to my mother’s delight. When the waitress came to collect our orders, everyone wanted a lobster roll. I was the only one that deviated from the norm, ordering the lobster mac and cheese.

My brother had talked up the seafood in Maine to his girlfriend from New York, and the lobster definitely didn’t disappoint. They were freshly made, and there was a lot of meat on a quality roll. It was buttery and delicious.

We already had dessert plans, so after we got the check we decided to walk around town for a while.

My brother needed a new belt, so we headed into one of the many overpriced, but inviting stores that Kennebunkport has to offer. After rummaging through heaps of nautical themed shorts and Lily Pulitzer dresses, I found a subtle navy belt. It had white sailboats etched along it. My brother loved it instantly, and marched over to the sales associate so he could pay.

After belt shopping, we headed to one of our favorite stores in town. The Stadium Gallery is home to a massive collection of sports photography. New England sports teams are the most widely represented, but I pointed out to my brother’s girlfriend that there were some Giants and Yankees photography buried in the back of the store.

“Sorry,” I laughed. “It’s New England.”

After leaving the store my mother began ushering us over to the local Ben and Jerry’s. She wanted a black raspberry ice-cream to cap off her day. I slung my arm through hers and we headed to the ice cream shop.

Soon we would head back to school, work, and reality.

But in the meantime we could get an ice-cream.
